All this means investing in a decent case is more important than ever, as now it’s not just the screen that you risk cracking if you drop your shiny new phone. It’s worth noting that the dimensions of the new models are fractionally different to the last generation, so most iPhone 7 cases should fit – but some form-fitting cases might not.
iPhone 8 Silicone Case
Probably the first thought for people looking for an iPhone 8 case, Apple’s official silicone case will fit either the 7 or 8, and offers protection from bumps and scrapes – though we’re not sure we’d trust it for serious drop protection. The Silicone case comes in a number of colours, including three new ones: Lemonade, Red Raspberry and Denim Blue. There is also a Product)RED Silicone case if you want one to match your new red iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. It’s also available for the iPhone 8 Plus or in leather.
Apple iPhone 8 Leather Case
A tad pricey, but the leather case from Apple is the best fitting case out there, and one of the most hard wearing. Apple’s attention to detail is evident, and the metal buttons feel and work perfectly when the case is on. The company has started changing its colours depending on the season, so check out the new Spring colours Bright Orange, Lemonade, Electric Blue, and Soft Pink. If you want an iPhone 8 case that offers protection without adding too much bulk, then Peel might be the case for you. This is one of the thinnest cases out there, and Peel’s aim is for you to forget it’s even there – there isn’t even a Peel logo, so the design is all Apple. The iPhone 8 Plus costs the same, at £17.42/US$24.99 from Peel.
This Speck case should offer rugged, reliable drop protection for the iPhone 8, while the textured grip helps stop those drops from happening at all, while adding a pretty distinctive aesthetic.
Tech21’s Evo Check case offers lightweight but robust protection, with a unique check design on the inside of the rear that helps hold the phone in place – though doesn’t offer a grippy texture on the outside of the case. It’s available in a few colours, along with a pricier floral design (£39.95/ US$49.95), and is also out for 8 Plus (£29.95/ US$39.95).
This one’s a little more bling. This Ted Baker hard shell case should keep your phone safe, while also being so shiny you can use it to blind any would-be thieves. It’s available in Silver or Rose Gold (£31/ US$48), and there’s a variant for the iPhone 8 Plus (£29.95/ US$49.95) too. If you’re worried about protecting your phone from scrapes and preserving that Apple aesthetic, but aren’t looking for heavy-duty drop protection, consider Olixar’s ultra-thin gel case. It’s totally transparent, and thin enough that you can almost forgot it’s there at all. Perfect for showing off that new (Product)RED iPhone 8. This Toast cover won’t offer much protection from drops (though it will at least keep scratches at bay), but it does look pretty fantastic. Available in three different wood finishes and a variety of engraved designs (including the option to completely customise it) it’s a great way to make your iPhone your own. Plus, you can rest safe in the knowledge that your phone cover is totally eco-friendly.
There’s no shortage of leather iPhone wallets around, so it can be hard for case manufacturers to stand out. Pad & Quill has opted for a two-tone design to differentiate, with an interior leather finish that contrast with the outside. The downside is that there’s no protective bumper for your phone – there’s only an adhesive to keep the device inside the wallet, which might be enough to make you nervous. Available for the 8 Plus for $79.95 (around £55.77) here.
Protection has always come first with Urban Armor Gear cases, and the Plyo is no exception – but unlike some of the brand’s other gear, this time design hasn’t been completely forgotten. The simple translucent design doesn’t obstruct that lovely glass back, but should go a long way towards keeping it safe, with 3m drop protection and a rugged build.
Mous cases are among the best we’ve seen for pairing drop protection with stunning design, offering a selection of slick cases made with a choice of five different materials: carbon fibre, leather, walnut (pictured), bamboo, or shell. They’re not cheap (though you can get up to £25/US$45 off on Mous’s website), but neither was your iPhone, and a Mous case should complement it perfectly.
